Familiar because they both talk about diamonds and skies? That's like saying the Beatle's ripped off twinkle twinkle little star.

No, the idea behind a musical artist is to create good music, not to be as original as possible. Originality is often a part of the good, but consider the following. Plenty of orchestra musicians are incredibly good musicians, yet have never played anything original. Does that mean they aren't artists or lack talent? Conversely, the opposite end of the spectrum of complete originality is too extreme. Every single good musician would have to invent their own genre or sub-genre to recieve acclaim.

You're forgetting one key element: Neither the Backstreet Boys nor One Direction wrote these songs. So, yeah, generic songwriters are generic.

(Sorry for the accidental blank comment)

I'm a thirteen year old girl. And I hate One Direction.

Also, Rihanna sung, 'You're beautiful like diamonds in the sky'. The Beatles sung, 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds'. Seem familiar?

They market these songs to young, impressionable and insecure teenage girls

Bands should be successful, because they make good quality music or do some weird stuff for a niche , not cause the band members basically prostitue themselves. And another reason is, more and more people start to realize that talent shows contain pretty much no talent worthy of attention and are pretty pissed off about all those talent show discussion they have to listen to or avoid. Call Cowell, give him a BJ, sing something playbak on one of his shows wearing almost nothing = fame!

Generally, the idea behind a musical artist is to be as original as possible to make themselves unique and themselves rather then copying others. As children, we're told to be ourselves and express ourselves throughout whatever means possible.
This picture just says that the 'band', One Direction, aren't expressing themselves. Or, they're fucking awful with names.

I'm not saying they are good! Anything but! But I don't see why people get so mad?!? I am not a 13 year old girl, so I'm not meant to like the music!

Who ever said One direction were original?!?!?! No one...EVER! They are popular because they are young, good looking boys who are aiming their music at young girls! In that respect they are very successful, no one takes these bands seriously, not even themselves. They know they haven't the talent of the Beatles and aren't trying to break boundaries, they are cheesy pop! People get far to hung up about it really.
