In real life this works up to a certain point. Diving of a skyscraper is ill advised, but a roll from a 20 foot jump is feasible with training and practice. The rotation lets your body redirect the motion and distribute the impact over a wider surface. Other, more realistic, games let you do this - specifically Mirror's Edge - and it's a particularly useful skill for those practicing free running and parkour.

Yes, but you're also talking about magical creatures that can be slashed and stabbed by swords for minor damage. You have to suspend a certain amount of disbelief when you're dealing with worlds where fairy dust and red potions make modern medicine laughably unnecessary.

the more you fall the more you die, it can be 1 - 20 hearts lost,and you can die from a big enough fall

It actually works, you just have to time the roll correctly, and roll enough like the last guy said. You should be fine lolz

unless he drops into somewhere shadowy you can roll before he hits the ground so he doesn't get hurt as long as you time it right. This is definately the case in OOC which is where the picture (of link) looks like its from

wrong.... once you drop so far link starts to scream, then lands in a crouching position and loses some, most or all hearts and collaspses and dies. except in the shadow temple where after a big drop he screams, and lands on a nice cushiony drum... of course a fairy would make this jump fine...
